Poppy Seed Roll

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened

  • 1/4 cup warm water

  • 1/4 package dry yeast (1 package)

  • 1 egg

  • 4 cups flour

  • 2-3 cans poppy seed filling (or other desired fillings)

Directions:

Dough

  • Scald milk

  • Add 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tsp salt, and 1/2 cup butter

  • Cool to lukewarm

  • In a large bowl, combine 1/4 cup warm water and 1 package dry yeast

  • Add milk mixture, 1 egg, and 2 cups flour

  • Beat until smooth

  • Add 2 more cups flour, beat until smooth

  • Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours - 2 days

Roll

  • Roll dough into 8 x 17 inch (you should be able to make 2 of these)

    • Be sure that the dough is not too thick

  • Spread poppy seed filling - leave about 1/2 inch from the edge with no filling

    • Don’t put too much on

  • Roll dough into a log

  • Form into a circle

  • Cut tabs 1 inch wide

    • Making sure not to cut all the way through the log, splitting it)

  • Twist each tab 1/4 turn - all in the same direction

  • Let rise 1 hour

  • Preheat oven to 375ºF

  • Bake for about 20-25 minutes
